Employment data collection activities (Sakernas) was first carried out by CBS in 1976. The concepts and definitions used in the collection of employment data by the Central Bureau of Statistics had not been changed since 1976, except for the concept of open unemployment and employment status, starting in 2001 has expanded.

Since the year 2011, Sakernas started back on a quarterly basis ie Februai month (the first quarter), in May (the second quarter), August (the third quarter), and November (the fourth quarter). For Sakernas activity in August, in addition to the quarterly sample also contained additional samples, for the purpose of obtaining the estimated annual rate as the presentation of data to the district / city.

With the growing urgency of the demands of both continuity of employment data, currency and the resulting increase in data accuracy, data collection Sakernas period 2011 - 2014 is done on a quarterly basis, namely: February May August and November presentation to the provincial level.

Beginning in 2015, SAKERNAS held biannually, namely in February (the first half) and August (the second half) to obtain estimates of the level of the Province. In August, in addition to the sample Sakernas Semester II are additional samples to obtain estimates of the presentation of data to the district / city level.

Data collected on the general state of each member of the household that includes name, relationship to head of household, gender and age. Especially for household members aged 10 and above will be asked to know information about marital status, education, employment, unemployment and work experience.
